Disclaimer: The Astrocade design has been done, but it has not been tested. The Rev0 cartridge is schematic- and layout-complete and the firmware and software run in emulation, but no board has been built and nothing has run on a real Astrocade yet. We could use some help validating and testing the design: reviewing the schematic and layout, building Rev0 boards, and trying the firmware and software on real consoles. If you can help, please get in touch on the FujiNet Discord.

Status

The firmware and software for the Astrocade bring-up are now working in emulation (FujiNet Go Astrocade Desktop and a patched MAME, against FujiNet-PC). CONFIG boots and browses TNFS hosts, and cartridge images load over the network: all 133 images in MAME’s Astrocade ROM set boot byte-exact. The Rev0 cartridge is fully designed but has not yet been built, so nothing has run on a real console yet.

Firmware

Current firmware can be pulled from https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-firmware

The cartridge is a new design: an RP2354A (an RP2350 with 2 MB of flash in the package, no external SRAM) that serves the Astrocade’s 8K cartridge window and emulates the 256K and 512K homebrew bank-switching mappers.

The RP2354A section of the firmware is in pico/astrocade/firmware. Build instructions in pico/astrocade/README.md

The ESP32S3 version of the firmware can be built with:

./build.sh -s fujiversal-astrocade
./build.sh -cbufm

The ESP32S3 build does not yet embed the RP2354A firmware; build the cartridge firmware separately in pico/astrocade with ./build-cart.sh. Board support for the Rev0 PCB (./build-cart.sh fujicade_rp2354) and embedding the cartridge firmware in the ESP32S3 build are on the astrocade-rp2354-board branch, which has not been merged yet.

Hardware

Current PCB has been laid out by Thomas Cherryhomes in KiCad: https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-hardware/tree/master/Astrocade/rev0

Rev0 is an all-in-one board in an Astrocade cassette shell for the 26-pin cartridge slot (RP2354A, ESP32-S3, USB-C and microSD). It is schematic- and layout-complete and packaged for JLCPCB, but has not yet been built.

There is no DIY option yet; until boards are built, the Astrocade side can be tried in emulation with FujiNet Go Astrocade Desktop (below).
