Disclaimer: The Atari 2600 design has been done, but it has not been tested. The Rev1 cartridge is schematic- and layout-complete and the firmware and software run in emulation, but no board has been built and nothing has run on a real Atari 2600 yet. We could use some help validating and testing the design: reviewing the schematic and layout, building Rev1 boards, and trying the firmware and software on real consoles. If you can help, please get in touch on the FujiNet Discord.

Status

The firmware and software for the Atari 2600 bring-up are now working in emulation (FujiNet Go Atari 2600 Desktop, built on Stella, and a patched MAME, against FujiNet-PC). CONFIG boots and browses TNFS hosts, and cartridge images load over the network. The Rev1 cartridge is fully designed but has not yet been built, so nothing has run on a real console yet.

Firmware

Current firmware can be pulled from the 2600-experiment branch, which has not been merged yet: https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-firmware/tree/2600-experiment

The cartridge is a new design: an RP2354A (an RP2350 with 2 MB of flash in the package, no external SRAM) that serves the 2600’s 4K cartridge window from on-chip RAM, with images up to 32K, and emulates the 2K/4K, F8, F6 and F4 (each with optional Superchip), FA, E0, UA, FE and CV bank-switching schemes.

The cartridge section of the firmware is in pico/atari-2600/firmware. Build instructions in pico/atari-2600/README-fujinet.md

The ESP32S3 version of the firmware can be built with:

./build.sh -s fujiversal-atari2600
./build.sh -cbufm

The ESP32S3 build does not yet embed the cartridge firmware; build the cartridge firmware separately in pico/atari-2600 with ./build-cart.sh. The cartridge firmware currently targets the RP2040 Rev0 board (fujivcs) and has not yet been ported to the RP2354A Rev1 board.

Hardware

Current PCB has been laid out by Thomas Cherryhomes in KiCad: https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-hardware/tree/master/ATARI-2600/Fujiversal-Atari2600-Rev1

Rev1 is an all-in-one board for the 24-pin Atari 2600 cartridge slot (RP2354A, ESP32-S3, USB-C and microSD). It is schematic- and layout-complete and packaged for JLCPCB, but has not yet been built.

The earlier Rev0 board (RP2040 with 74LVC245 bus buffers), which the current cartridge firmware targets, is on the atari2600-rev0 branch: https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-hardware/tree/atari2600-rev0/ATARI-2600/Fujiversal-Atari2600. It has not been built either.

There is no DIY option yet; until boards are built, the Atari 2600 side can be tried in emulation with FujiNet Go Atari 2600 Desktop (below).

Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Dragster, Tennis and Video Olympics are networked two-player versions of the original cartridges: each is a patch applied to your own ROM plus a relay server. They are still being finished, and will show up in the Lobby as each one is ready.
